1. Early bird gets the worm – What time of the day

This plays a big part on who sees your posts on the “Wall”. Generally Wall posts written in the early morning, at the finish of the work day and late at night have 20% higher engagement rates. More people are on Facebook outside of the business hours than during work, so make sure to think of the time of the day when posting.

However take your target market in consideration through (e.g. stay at home mums; uni students and shift workers all use Facebook during the day more).

2. It’s all about – Length

The longer the length of the wall post, the less engaging the wall post is. Posts of 80 characters or less seem to be the most engaging. It seems people are three times more likely to click on full-length URL’s instead of the URL shortener like bit.ly. (like on twitter). This finding is completely the opposite of the findings on Twitter.

Facebook is about creating that community feel and creating short interesting topics that can create discussions on your page, engaging yourself and your users. Also, ask questions at the end of your wall post rather than at the beginning or middle. Apparently, posts that end with a question have a 15% higher engagement rate than posts with questions at the beginning or in the middle.

3. URL’s – still about length

It seems people are three times more likely to click on full-length URL’s instead of the URL shortener like bit.ly. (like on twitter). This finding is completely the opposite of the findings on Twitter.

4. Ask and you shall receive

5. Finally – Tell fans what to do

If you are running promotions online you need to tell your “fans” that follow you what to do and how to do it. The more simple the instructions, the better it is for you and for them. TIP: Tell fans to “like” your post, or tell them to “comment” on your post. Tell users outright what you want, they will listen, and your Facebook page will grow.
